Fifth and Sixth Grade Students Gather Care Packages for Soldiers
Students at Memorial Elementary spent the month of February gathering needed supplies to send to soldiers overseas. Each day the Student Council Representatives from their homeroom collected and transported the supplies to Mrs. Myers’ office. Fifth graders as part of their Technology curriculum in Mrs. Dreyfus’ computer classes wrote friendly letters to the soldiers. After researching the areas of Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan, students were able to comment in their letters what they learned from their research. Local Girl Scout troops donated Girl Scout cookies and Tasty Kakes for the cause. They also made crafts to complete the boxes. The Wilkes-Barre Verizon Telecom Pioneers financed the shipping and handling costs of all the boxes. Because of all the hard work put forth by Memorial students, staff and various contributing organizations, we were able to send a little of “home” to the soldiers abroad.
